SMART - Strategic Management in the Art of Theatre

Strategic Management in the Art of Theatre (SMART)
A capacity building programme for theatre makers

SMART is India's first, and only, capacity building programme for theatre groups. A collaborative project of India Theatre Forum (ITF), India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) and Junoon, SMART addresses theatre groups' need to understand the role of strategic thinking and management in their work. At SMART, practitioners from theatre and management collectively share their experiences and learning through a structured pedagogic process.

The goal of the course is to sharpen the thinking and working processes of the groups leading them to create three year strategic road maps for themselves. Accordingly, SMART spans five months and is divided into three phases:

  1. A 10-day residential course that lays the foundation of the programme, covers topics such as Core Values, Group Sustainability, Audience Building, Communications, Financial Management, Fundraising and Administration, and includes the hands-on process of groups creating strategic plans that speak to their own desires and realities.
  2. A 4-month mentorship period where each group develops its plan, with its own members, under the guidance of a mentor.
  3. A final 2-day period, where plans are presented and everyone has a grand graduation party as a finale!

SMART is a project of the India Theatre Forum. Junoon is delighted to be a co-Managing Partner with the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) for SMART.

This unique capacity building programme for theatre groups is imagined from the inside-out - by people who are either directly working in the field or closely associated with it. This unique perspective allows SMART to be in sync with the needs and desires of theatre practitioners in India, and to offer a course that equips them to address their specific realities in effective ways. The entire aim of the course is to enable theatre groups to build strong and sustainable management practices that work for them and enable them to take their theatre work and dreams forward.
