The Arts Encounters
We have worked with professional artists to create a series of Arts Encounters, which share the delight and magic of amazing art forms with young people. Each encounter is an enthralling journey into the heart of an art form practiced in India, a magical key that unlocks secret and exciting doors into the performing arts. Through demonstration, interaction, conversation and performance, artists enable students to develop a sense of familiarity and understanding with these art forms that otherwise can feel out of reach. In the process, students claim these performance forms as their own to enjoy, appreciate and delight in. They imbibe a positive, complex and rich sense of our heritage and identity. Junoon offers Arts Encounters in Kathak, percussion traditions of Kerala, Nautanki theatre, Puppetry, Contemporary Dance and Music, and much more.
The Teachers' Workshops
Junoon offers arts-based workshops for teachers from all disciplines. These workshops, drawing upon theatre and related arts, create a conducive environment to reflect, to explore, to examine, freed from the fear of failure. They encourage perspective and understanding. They offer space to engage refresh and reinvigorate you. We look forward to contributing to joyful learning.
Do children get to perform?
Not exactly. We do not work directly with children. We expose them to professional theatre and performance arts as well as interactions with artistes. However, this programme is designed to enable children to creatively express themselves, inspired by all that they have experienced, in the last day's Creative Showcase. This is paramount in bringing together the valuable facets of team work, leadership, creativity, expression, communication etc.
How will 5 days impact a whole year in a child's school life?
This deeply immersive 5-day experience will leave an indelible impression on the child, especially since there is an outlet for their own expression to take form on the last day. This consolidates all that they have been exposed to and delighted in, through this hands experiential learning. The types of impact we have experienced in the past in a child have been:
- Exposure to professional theatre productions: Watching theatre that is created for specific age groups that takes the audience into the world of theatre where active participation of the audience is essential to bring the play alive. This in itself is an amazingly strong experience. And then the post-show interactions are special memorable experiences.
- Exposure to variety of our cultural richness: The delight in being able to say they are familiar with an Indian art form from another that they had never been exposed to before.
- Letting the child into the world of the performing arts as an equal: Children have felt the impact of being let into these worlds as opposed to being lectured about the art form from a dais or stage, always keeping the artistes aloof from the audience. We consciously design our interactions in a way to create a sense of this equal exchange - of respective both the artistes and the audience equally.
- Creating the opportunity for each child to participate in the Creative Showcase: In whatever way they feel fit, each child participates in this group engagement of self expression and this is a very important aspect of the overall impact. This final day Showcase is not to be seen as a grand production, but to be seen as a process of working together to create something new.
How can the school give up 5 days to this programme?
Most schools have a lean period of time in the annual calendar. This only needs 2 full days and 3 half-days away from the usual school timetable. And this programme is as essential to a child's holistic education as academics.
Can there be less than 500 students?
Yes, there can be less than 500 children, however the fee remains the same. Ours is an age specific programme, specially designed for children of the same age group – junior or middle or senior. The reason we decided upon 500 is because this is the maximum size of an audience that can still allow for an intimate theatrical experience. This is paramount. All other engagements, other than the Trip to the Theatre can be split into 2 groups of 250 students for each interaction to enable further interaction and intimacy with the artistes.
Can there be more than 500 students?
We came up with the number of 500 children keeping in mind the immersive impact of this programme. It really hurts this impact if this number increases - so we are very strict about keeping with in this 500 limit. As we have mentioned in the brochure, a school may choose to host the play or the Arts Encounter for additional number of children at an additional cost. But this needs to be in discussion with Junoon and needs confirmation and inclusion in our MOU.
Can you direct our Annual Day Play?
No. We do not work directly with children. But we are sure that exposure to our programme over time will impact the quality of the school's annual day production, opening up possibilities and ideas of how theatre can be created for both the school teacher and the student.
How are the teachers involved?
We would like the teachers to play an active role in the whole programme, but as equals and as participants along with the students. We would like their help in gently nudging the students to work with healthy team synergies and wholesome group dynamics. However, we would like them to allow the children to express their ideas without instruction or direction from them. In other words, teachers should play facilitators amongst the groups, while giving complete room for creative participation by every child in the group.
Do the students get any certification?
Yes, we will be handing out certificates to every student who has completed the entire schedule with us.
Vikram Iyengar is a Kolkata-based Kathak dancer, choreographer and theatre director, and Artistic Director of Ranan. He was initiated into Kathak by Smt Rani Karnaa, he is a recipient of the Government of India National Scholarship and National Junior Fellowship, and holds a Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangit Samiti, Allahabad. He has performed across India as well as in USA, UK, Hong Kong, Moscow, Qatar and Bhutan. An INLAKS scholar with an MA in Performing Arts from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, he has taught Asian and Intercultural Theatre at BA and MA levels in the UK, he has also contributed regularly to arts research through articles, seminar papers, workshops and research projects. Noted for the conscious bringing together of classical dance, movement and drama creating an experience of total theatre, Vikram\'s production work spans choreography for stage and film, dance-theatre and dance-film explorations, and performance collaborations with several performance directors in Europe.
Utkarsh Mazumdar is a veteran of the stage. He has been doing theatre in English, Hindi and Gujarati for over 45 years. He is an actor, a singer and a director. His first Gujarati commercial play was in 1970 a musical called Hippy Hippy hurre Written by Abid Surti. He worked extensively with Satyadev Dubey.
Utkarsh was one of the founder members of Arpana and directed its first play Uljulool written by Adhya Rangacharya.

Timira Gupta is a trained Arts-Based Therapy practitioner working in two special schools and a residential centre for children-at-risk in Mumbai. She also works as a drama teacher and resource person in two mainstream schools and conducts teacher-training workshops across the city. While her passion lies in education, her secret dream is to be a circus artist. She loves juggling, walking on stilts and to do anything that results in broken bones!
Sampurna Chattarji is a poet, novelist, translator and children\'s author. Her thirteen books include four poetry titles: The Scorpion (e-single, Harper21, 2013), Absent Muses (Poetrywala, 2010), The Fried Frog (Scholastic, 2009), Sight May Strike You Blind (Sahitya Akademi, 2007); two novels, Rupture (2009) and Land of the Well (2012), both from HarperCollins; and her short-story collection about Bombay/Mumbai, Dirty Love (Penguin, 2013). Numerous anthology appearances include 60 Indian Poets (Penguin); The Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Indian Poets; The HarperCollins Book of English Poetry and The Literary Review Indian Poetry Issue. Sampurna is the editor of Sweeping the Front Yard, an anthology of women\'s writing. Her poetry has been translated into German, Swiss-German, Welsh, Scots, French, Gaelic, Estonian, Arabic, Portuguese, Frisian, Tamil, Manipuri, Kannada, Bangla and Bambaiyya; and her children\'s fiction into Welsh and Icelandic. In 2012, she was the Charles Wallace writer-in-residence at the University of Kent, Canterbury. Selected Poems (Harper Perennial, 2014), her translation of the Bengali poet Joy Goswami\'s work, was shortlisted for the inaugural Khushwant Singh Memorial Prize for Poetry.
Ratnabali Bhattacharjee has been acting since 1998 and has worked with inspirational directors like Phyllis Bose, Rehaan Engineer, Akash Khurana, Akarsh Khurana, Sunil Shanbag and Makrand Deshpande. She has also toured internationally and in India with Commedia dell\'arte director, Marco Luly. Her personal goal is to make theatre a source of joy for children. She has conducted workshops, and also directed children in her adaption of plays like Alibaba and Premchand\'s Idgah. Ratnabali hopes to ignite the love for theatre and that spark of mad joy in as many children as she can.
Puja Sarup got bitten by the theatre bug in 2003 and hasn't looked back since. She did her MA in Theatre Arts from Mumbai University, travelled to France to work with Footsbarn and Buchingers Boots (travelling theatre companies based in France) and worked in several plays in Mumbai with directors like Rajat Kapoor, Atul Kumar, Sunil Shanbag and Rehaan Engineer. She is currently studying Movement Theatre at Helikos - International School of Theatre Creation in Italy.
Graphic artist, cartoonist and designer based in New Delhi, India. He studied graphic design at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad.
He is one of the founders of People Tree - a collaborative studio and store for artists, designers and craftspeople that has grown since its inception in 1990 into a widely regarded design studio and store associated with the promotion of innovative hand work, creative community building and social and ecological advocacy. Along with his wife and fellow designer Gurpreet Sidhu, he leads People Tree's in-house design studios in New Delhi and Goa.
Orijit started collecting and drawing comics in his early teens, and has been deeply involved with the development of comics and graphic novels in India. His pioneering work "River of Stories" (Kalpavriksh 1994) is considered to be India's first graphic novel. He is a co-founder of the Pao Collective of graphic artists, and a key figure behind the award winning "Pao: The Anthology of Comics#1" (Penguin 2012). His comics and graphic art have been published internationally.
Between 2009 and 2011, Orijit conceptualized-and led a team that executed-one of the world's largest hand-painted murals, installed at the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Orijit is Mario Miranda Chair visiting professor at Goa University, where he has initiated an experimental arts research project entitled "Mapping Mapusa Market Project" involving students, educationists and artists.
He is currently also engaged in an Indo-Palestinian project on cultural resistance in collaboration with theatre artists.
Projects and Exhibitions
The Pao Collective - Sen is one of the five founders of The Pao Collective. Founded in 2009, the collective aims to "support comics as a medium and a culture in India. Originally, they imagined establishing an outpost of sorts for comics culture in Delhi, from which they could reach out to and support creators in other cities and areas around the country." PAO: the Anthology of Comics Volume 1 published by Penguin India in 2012 won the 2nd Comic Con India Awards 2012 in the best graphic anthology category.
A Place In Punjab - 5 storey-high "walk-through mural experience" that takes the visitor through sights and insights of Punjabi life at the Virasat-e-Khalsa in Anandpur Sahib, Punjab. Sen conceived this mural project and worked with 13 collaborators to execute it. It opened in November 2011. The multimedia museum Virasat-e-Khalsa in which Sen's mural creationis located was designed by renowned Boston-based architect Moshe Safdie.
Mapping Mapusa Market As the Mario Miranda Chair visiting professor at Goa University, Sen initiated Mapping Mapusa Market. It brings together "artists, designers, writers, teachers, students and interested members of the public to explore and document the complex life of the Mapusa Market in Goa from a variety of perspectives- illustrations, photographs, videos and interviews. The project looked at how a historical market evolved and how it is coping with the challenges of globalisation, consumerism and supermarket and mall culture".

KELI is a Mumbai based Charitable organization striving to preserve, develop and propagate the classical and traditional cultural heritage of India. Keli has been active in this field from the past several years and during this period, has successfully handled a number of important projects in furtherance of its objectives. The annual Keli festivals, structured thematically every year, are well known to artists and art lovers of the City and have earned the organization a significant place in the cultural life of Mumbai.
Jaimini Pathak is the founder of Working Title, a Mumbai-based arts organisation. His last 15 years have been dedicated to working in theatre development, engagement and performances for audiences ranging from age 5 to 75. From village fairs to Waterman Theatre in London, his work is spread over a variety of locations across India and the world. His activities include Theatre-in-Education programmes, several year-long Theatre curriculum development programmes with schools and colleges across the country, as well as Theatre-in-Corporate programmes that focus on communication and skill development in various corporate organisations.
Gillo Theatre Repertory
A group specialising in theatre for young audiences, they have created 12 plays in the past 6 years. Gillo also conducts workshops and engagements that make theatre and the allied arts an integral part of children's lives. Their work includes content development, performance and training. Primarily based in Mumbai, they tour across India with performances, workshops and theatre based engagements. Creative workshops for children, teachers and parents are an important part of their effort to engage children and their community with the theatre arts. Gillo is a member of ASSITEJ India (International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People) and a partner with Junoon.
Ajay Noronha is a Mumbai-based cinematographer and documentary film maker. His passion for telling a story using images has taken him across the world in diverse contexts - television shows, documentaries, feature films, music videos, video art installations and workshops. Ajay teaches cinematography at the Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai besides conducting workshops at other film schools. He is currently exploring the role of expressive arts in conflict transformation with children and educators from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine and Israel.
