Nadira Zaheer Babbar was born to Sayed Sajjad Zaheer and Razia Sajjad Zaheer on 20th January, 1948. An illustrious literary family, Sayed Sajjad Zaheer was founder of the Progressive Writers Association, and a founder member of IPTA Theatre Group and Afro-Asian Writers Association. Razia Sajjad Zaheer was a renowned Urdu Short Story Writer and a Novelist. She was an Urdu language teacher at the Lucknow University for 25 years and a strong supporter of progressive forces.

In 1975, Nadira Zaheer married Raj Babbar, a National School of Drama graduate, eminent film personality and currently a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).


1971 -1973
Nadira Zaheer Babbar stayed in East Germany and worked at Berlinaensemble. She worked with great directors such as Fritz Benevitz and Grotovosky, Walfgang Heinz, Ursula Kchimskye and Henry Haward.

Back in India, she taught Drama at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, and also continued work in theatre in New Delhi until she moved to Mumbai.

Founded Ekjute Theatre Group in Mumbai. Over the last 30 years, Ekjute has staged over 15000 shows of quality productions and has introduced new trends and higher standards of quality to Hindi theatre. The group has played an integral role in introducing several prominent Indian actors of today to theatre, television and cinema. Ekjute plays have travelled all over the country and also represented India at several International Theatre Festivals.

Nadira Zaheer Babbar initiated the EKJUTE Theatre Group Workshops with an aim to provide theatre knowledge and spread awareness about Indian arts through Training programme and a platform for theatre enthusiasts. Over 5000 participants across all ages and from different parts of the country have been part of these workshops.

Under this branch she initiated theatre workshops designed specially for children. These workshops have been a part of several schools’ curriculum such as Aditya Birla World Academy, Avalon Heights, SVKM International, Delhi Public School and many more. Ekjute also produces plays for the young audience and the cast for these plays constitutes almost completely of child actors, some of the plays are - “Aao Picnic Chalien” (Our Day Out), “Azdak ka Insaaf” (Caucasian Chalk Circle), Habib Tanvir’s “Charandas Chor”, Bharatendu Harishchandra’s Andher Nagri Chaupat Raja, among many others.
