Voicing the Voiceless: Fighting to Express

"A few years ago, a major festival in Mumbai cancelled the play Ali J following a complaint launched by a right-wing group - such socially-pressured censorship seems to have become par for the course nowadays. And in more recent times, we have had the fascinating censorship saga around Padmavati, renamed to Padmavat, with multiple groups across the country staking their claim to the right to censor.

Where does the artist wanting to deal with social and political issues, to tell a story that matters to him/her, go?

Where does the artist who wants to play with time and form, sometimes for its own sake, sometimes to make his/her socio-political point, go?

Many turn to the digital space, which till date remains a comparatively uncensored space, though one can of course have the odd run-in with trolls and the even odder arrest because a post or cartoon or expression was distasteful to some.

We are delighted to invite Devashish Makhija - filmmaker, graphic artist & poet - to Mumbai Local, to share with us his concerns around the freedom of expression - especially for those on the margins - and how he fights for the space to practice it in his film-making. Through conversations around his short films, he will share how the digital space allows him to deal with political and social issues that he is less able to address pointedly in his feature-film work. He will also take us into the world of short films, and the exciting possibilities inherent in that particular form.

Expect to be watching films, discussing them closely with Devashish, and contemplating the critical links between film-making, freedom of expression and the space for freedom, without which an artist ceases to be one."

For those of you who absolutely cannot make it to the venue, we will be live on Facebook for you. Join us on our page at 5:30 pm on Friday, 20th July.
