The Stage is Set: On direction and set design in Theatre

What is the role of the set in theatre? How do the director and the set designer work together to create a play? Can a set design be so critical as to give direction to a play?

In the city of Mumbai, commercial Marathi theatre works in 4-hour slots - that's 4 hours to set up your play, perform it, and take it down before it moves to the next venue. Yes, they even perform at multiple venues in a day - so sets have to be built in such a way that it fits perfectly into the bus that transports it. In such a scenario, set design is often functional, relegated to box sets giving a basic environment to the play.

We are delighted to invite the duo of Vijay Kenkre - actor and director - and Pradeep Mulye - designer - to Mumbai Local for a conversation about directing, set design and theatre. Vijay and Pradeep began there working relationship way back in 1979, as actors. Since then. Pradeep is Vijay's go-to set designer when he directs a play, for, according to Vijay, 'Pradeep makes sets which direct the play.'

Look forward to a wonderful evening of jugalbaandi between a director and a set designer, who have over years brought their creative energies together to make some of the most amazing sets in the trying circumstances of Marathi commercial theatre. Through delightful anecdotes and fascinating visuals, they will share their creative process and expression with us - we can expect to enjoy the particular genius of Pradeep Mulye through the eyes of his director-friend Vijay Kenkre.

See you on Sun 10th September, 5 pm at Bhau Daji Lad Museum. And a gentle reminder - to please send this email on to at least 5 of your friends who would be interested - the more people who join us the merrier!
