Nature, Shapes & Mathematics

"If nature were not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing, and if nature were not worth knowing, life would not be worth living."
- Henri Poincare, French mathematician, theoretical physicist, engineer, and philosopher of science.

Is there a connection between nature and mathematics? Between the physical universe we inhabit and the abstract universe of mathematics?

Many of us have experienced mathematics as innumerable, endless calculations. When we've looked up at stars in the sky, or been fascinated by droplets of water, or wondered at the grandeur of rocky mountains, mathematics has probably been the farthest thing from our minds. And yet, to understand and predict the movements of the stars and planets, the physical behaviour of oceans or drops of water, and the tectonic shifts of the earth, we have no choice but to turn to mathematics as the underlying language of science.

We are delighted to invite Mahan MJ - Geometer and topologist - to Mumbai Local. According to him, mathematics is about patterns, not calculations. In his session, he will show us how geometry - his area of specialization -emerges from the physical world we live in. We will enter with him into a mathematical universe, where the shapes and surfaces in the world around us are seen as visual information, and where the mathematician seeks to understand and classify this information in order to better understand the physical universe.

Look forward to an evening where we will begin to grasp how the formal beauty of mathematics begins to emerge from the physical beauty of the natural world around us. An evening, where those of us who love mathematics will simply add to our pleasure, and those of us who have not known how to love it will be given a way.

We hope to see you there. And as always, a request - please send this email on to at least 5 of your friends who would be interested. Help us spread the joy!

Mahan Mj is a mathematician at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and a monk of the Ramakrishna Order. He specializes in geometry and its sister subject - topology - also called rubber-sheet geometry. An alumnus of St. Xavier's Collegiate School Calcutta, Indian Institiute of Technology Kanpur and University of California, Berkeley, he is a recipient of the 2011 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Mathematical Sciences and the Infosys Prize 2015 for Mathematical Sciences. He is also an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2018 at Rio de Janeiro. He is best known for his work in hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory, low-dimensional topology and complex geometry.
