Dil Deke Dekho : The joys of discovering Indian Cinema
Are the films we get to watch, only a very tiny part of the incredibly rich landscape of Indian cinema? How many Indian languages have we seen films in, when India makes films in 42 languages and dialects? Isn't it tragic that foreigners get to see world class Indian films at international film festivals, while we don't? What are these treasures that we are missing in our own backyard?
Meenakshi Shedde stumbled into the depth and breadth of Indian cinema when she became the South Asian Consultant for international film festivals. This role gave her the opportunity to discover marvellous films coming out of our country. She has been mad as a bumble bee that people can see the best Indian films in Cannes, Berlin, Venice or Paris, but Indians themselves are often unable to see them, because of the way film distribution works in our country. Through her film programming, writing and reviews, Meenakshi passionately devotes herself to backing good films and sharing them with us, and dreams of a time when we can all access them.
We are delighted to invite Meenakshi Shedde - film curator, critic and journalist - to Mumbai Local, to share with us the incredible beauty and richness of Indian cinema. She will share with us her journey from being assistant editor in the Times of India to film critic to film consultant and curator, and the thrilling film discoveries she continues to make along the way. Through her remarkable knowledge of and passion for film, she will open up a rich universe of Indian cinema for us.
Look forward to an evening shot through with a love of film - through bubbling conversation, clips from amazing films, and insights into what makes Indian cinema -- from all over the country -- unique.
