Arts Week with Springdales School, New Delhi

At Junoon, we believe that young people must regularly have access to artists and their arts practices, to seep in the spirit of the arts. Such exposure can be transformative and life-changing.

We have curated a week-long, immersive experience, the Arts at Play Week that combines exposure, learning and practice to open out the horizons of the mind for young people, while simultaneously building value for rigour, reflection, effort and determination. The students experience the power of teamwork and collaboration, and the joys of free creative expression. They learn how to transform working with what you have into magic and delight and that it is in their power to create an interesting life for themselves.

It is to this end that we are delighted to offer this magical experience to the primary and middle school students of Springdales School, New Delhi.

Akvarious in its sixteen years of being in the world of theatre has staged over 50 plays in Hindi and English, covering a wide range of themes and styles. That's quite a lot, don't you think? Six of these plays have been nominated for the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards and two have won the prestigious award for Best Play. Do they remind you of the star performers in school? Akvarious has performed over a 1000 shows across 26 cities, in India and abroad. And the group has produced eight plays for children.

Kattaikkuttu is a Tamil language-based theatre form that uses songs, music, dialogue, acting, movement, make-up and elaborate costumes to perform all-night long stories from the epic Mahabharata. Its origins are unclear. As an oral tradition of non-elite rural people, the theatre was (and is) looked down upon as a form of physical labour. Therefore, nobody took the trouble to document its history. Kattaikkuttu is performed for rural, not elite audiences who commission and pay for all-night performances collectively. Most performances take place on the occasion of a popular (Hindu) religious festival. A special play (Karna Moksham) is performed on the 15th to 16th day after someome had died - in the hope that her/his soul will attain moksham.
