A keen observer of life and all its wonderful details, Sudhir Patwardhan is an artist, and an occasional writer and lecturer...
How do you build a relationship with the city you live in? What kind of a relationship do you want to build? And what happens to that relationship as the city itself changes?
Life in the city of Bombay/Mumbai has changed tremendously over the past couple of decades. The cityscape has transformed, the nature of available public transport has changed, localities have mutated, buildings have taken on new meanings. The nonstop stimulation of this city has now sprawled out further and futher, making it one large connected mass of mini-cities. And in this changing megapolis, individuals - millions of us - work out our lives, seek out our experiences, adjust, engage, step back, reach for and live out our not-so-separate lives.
We are delighted to invite Sudhir Patwardhan - contemporary painter - to Mumbai Local once again, to share with us his changing relationship with the city. As artist, as ex-radiologist, Sudhir sees his professions making him a voyeur, sometimes a privileged voyeur. Yet, he has also always been impelled to participate in the life of the city - to belong, to be one amongst the throng. Nowadays, moving on from his early cityscapes, Sudhir finds himself painting interiors - of people at home, in studios. He feels that this tension between living in the city and retreating from it, observing it and participating in it, being inside and being outside, is critical to his work, informing and propelling it in directions he does not necessarily foresee.
Look forward to an evening where we re-engage with the city of Mumbai through the paintings and approach of this wonderful painter. Expect to contemplate powerful paintings, and the impetuses that gave rise to them. And count on examining your own relationship with this city we live in.
