Arts Practice and The Politics of Inclusion: A Critical Enquiry
"Identification with the position of the artist matters," says Navjot Altaf emphatically. "Political decisions made by the artist explicate her/his aesthetics."
We are delighted to invite Navjot Altaf - A visual artist working in multimedia - to Mumbai Local, to share with us her thoughts and questions on the politics of artistic practices, the nature of research, collaborative and participative practice, and the politics of inclusion.
Many years ago, Navjot Altaf journeyed into Bastar on the invitation of Jaidev Baghel , a well-known adivasi artist, to his arts centre Shilpi Gram. This marked the beginning of her interaction with indigenous artists and the local community members, to the setting up of their center DIAA - Dialogue Internactive Artists Association at Kondagaon - with artists Shantibai , Rajkumar and Gessuram. Entering into this realm has meant, for Navjot, the opening up of a plethora of questions - Is there a criterion of defining artistic merit or higher aesthetical values? The relationship between art works and their context. What is contemporary politics of emancipation? Etc.
We can look forward to an evening of asking critical questions about life and her art practice, her belief that "through research, collaboration, interactive working processes, artist can enhance levels of sensibility to processes that connect".

Navjot Altaf's practice involves painting, sculptures, installations, video, and site-specific works that negotiate various disciplinary boundaries. The essence of her imagery comes out of her theoretical and methodological innovation, combined with deeply engaged readings of historical and contemporary art, film and cultural theory. Navjot continues to work with people from other disciplines and simultaneously since 1997 has been working in collaboration with indigenous artists and communities in Chhattisgarh in Central India. Her methodology ascertains the interactive aspects of collaboration, whereby the work emerges out of an extended dialogical interaction. Navjot is interested in understanding the significance of transdisciplinary work "whose nature is not merely to cross disciplinary boundaries.

Her solo exhibition opened in The Guild Gallery Alibaug on the 24th of Feb, and the forthcoming events she is part of are Yinchuan Biennale in China this year and her Retrospective at NGMA Bombay in Dec 2018.
Navjot has been participating in national and international artists' residencies and in seminars Including Anthropocene Curriculum at the House of World Culture, Berlin, (2014 and 2016).
She is one of the founder members of a center 'Dialogue - interactive Artists Association', Kondagaon, Chhattisgarh. Has organized Seminars /discussions Samvad 1' Samvad 2' and Samvad 3' (2009 - 2011- 2015) at 'Dialogue'.
Navjot lives and works in Mumbai and Bastar, India.
