A little about the play …
“Mein meri Jhansi nahi doongi”, cried out Rani Lakshmibai, when the British tried to take the kingdom of Jhansi away from her. We remember her in our history as the brave queen who fought against the British and refused to give up. Jhalkari was the young Dalit girl, who rose from her humble background to become the Rani’s close advisor and commander of the Durga Sena – the Rani’s women’s army. This play Jhalkari is about this brave young girl, and the friendship between her and Rani Lakshmibai, as they took on the might of the British Empire in the revolt of 1857.

Rahi Theatre was formed in 2016 by Neha Singh and Dhruv Lohumi to bring to stage rare and unheard stories from our own rich Indian culture. They are interested in sharing stories with a focus on women, caste and religion based minorities, and other unsung heroes. Dohri Zindagi was their first production which received the Gender-Bender grant by Sandbox Collective. The play has performed 35 shows in 18 cities across India. Jhalkari is their second production. Rahi Theatre uses Indian art forms like Kawad, Nautanki, folk music, different dialects and martial arts in their plays.
