For artist Bharati Kapadia, making art is a deeply inward journey driven by essential, often spiritual, questions - "What is it that animates me? How do I stay with that impulse? Which materials can I work with to give form to that?" Intuition, and an affinity for material, drives her creative impulse and the art work takes form as it is being made.
We are delighted to invite Bharati Kapadia - visual artist, performer and an out-of-the box innovator - to Mumbai Local to share with us her artistic journey. From her beginnings as a graphic designer writing M F Husain's bio while he sketched it, to her early years as a part of Astitiva (the Mumbai-based fine arts collective that sought freedom for the artist from having to depend on galleries for showing and selling their work), to her first solo show 'Of Currents & Confluences' in which light plays a major role in making invisible visible, she will take us through her onward journey as an artist and as a human being, a mutually dependant relationship.
Expect unexpected journeys through the artist's process, expect to be treated to visuals of her work, and to think through the expression of an inward search for self realisation through creating art.
See you on Saturday. If you are unable to make it to the venue, do join us on live feed.
This session is curated by Sanjna Kapoor.
RSVP for this session begins on Friday, 28th December, 2018.
Bombay based artist Bharati Kapadia is a well-known personality on the contemporary Indian art platform. Over the years, she has consistently shown work which is strikingly original in formal innovation. Dealing with issues related to inner evolution, memory and identity, she works with techniques in which the intervention of light becomes crucial for a complete experience of the art work.
In 1998, Kapadia showed her work in Austria at THE SEARCH WITHIN exhibition which showcased works by 10 Indian and 10 Austrian artists. This exhibition was held at the Pernegg Monastery and subsequently traveled to Salzburg, New Delhi and Mumbai. Again, in 2000 she was invited to show at the MAY FOR INDIA AND YOU festival in Tulln. In May 2008 she was invited to show at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna, and later in June 2008, showed with Klaus Lea gallery in Munich.
She has participated in international art projects including THE TILE PROJECT, DESTINATION: THE WORLD 2004/2005 organized by the Boston based artists collective Transcultural Exchange and OBJECTS OF WONDER at The Brewster Project 2003. She has lectured and given slide presentations at the Royal College of Art, London, Seattle Asian Art Museum and South Asian Women's Creative Collective, USA, The National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai and several other institutions in India.
Her solo performance project Untold Stories, written and enacted by her, has been presented at several venues in India and abroad including Munich and Istanbul. In 2016 Untold Stories participated in the Liverpool International Theatre Festival, where it was awarded the certificate for Excellence in Solo Performance. Her video work L FOR... made last year was shown in the Text for Text show in Mumbai and 'De-Text', Art and Philosophy Festival in New Delhi in 2018.
