Arts Encounter with DPS Surat

India has a long unbroken history of the arts, with each region of the country throwing up a phenomenal diversity of arts expressions and practices. So much of who we are is in our arts and culture.

Junoon's Arts Encounters bring performing arts from across India to your doorstep, so that students may experience and revel in the rich culture we have.

Each Arts Encounter is a performance-interaction opening the doors to a unique performance form. Students and teachers get to know the heartbeat of a form, its essential structures, its specific guidelines for creativity, and its space for improvisation and play. They are also introduced to the cultures, histories and geographies that the forms arise from. And finally, they are treated to powerful performances by the professional artists, so that they may experience the magic and attraction of each form.

We are delighted to be bringing the magical experience of Western Classic Music and Carnatic Music to the primary school students of Delhi Public School, Surat with Anil Srinivasan on the 2nd and 3rd of May, 2019.

Anil Srinivasan is an accomplished classical pianist, the first to be awarded the coveted Sangeet Natak Akademi Youth Award in 2010 for creative and experimental music, India's national honour for musicians under 35. His various collaborative works – with several of India’s top artistes have come in for critical acclaim. Collaborators include U Shrinivas, Ravikiran, Aruna Sairam, Unnikrishnan, Rakesh Chaurasia, Lalgudi Krishnan, Gaurav Mazumdar, Jayanthi Kumaresh and others. He is best known for his collaboration with Sikkil Gurucharan, with whom he has produced ten highly popular albums.

Anil had composed extensively for dance and theatre internationally working as far afield as Korea, Australia and the United States.

His active involvement in music has seen his performances all over the globe. He has been a TED speaker, chaired conferences on music in venues as diverse as Liverpool Hope University and the University of Mumbai and has represented India across multiple forums involving arts education.

Importantly, he is the founder of the hugely successful “Rhapsody” music education initiative, to take the classical arts through structured, systematic syllabi delivered through schools using a combination of physical classroom learning and online support, that reaches out to nearly 75000 children across Southern India.

He serves as a trustee of the Nalanda Way Foundation, reaching children in difficult situations, and as a director of The Peninsula Studios in Delhi, one of India’s first initiatives to record and archive independent music.
