Fact & Fancy: A Journey Within

"I am an artist of science," declares Sukant Saran. "Some are artists of landscapes; I am of science."

Trained as a high energy physicist, the arts have always been an integral part of Sukant Saran's life. Over time, as he felt himself drawn more and more to the philosophy of science, he also felt himself drawn more and more towards being an artist. The arts went from being a beloved hobby to a serious undertaking; science remained a central trigger. Sukant's artistic practice is inspired by a multitude of niche sciences. His creations emerge from abstracting out the scientific principle as well as the aesthetics from the particular science that absorbs him at the moment.

We are delighted to invite Sukant Saran - artist of science - to Mumbai Local, to share with us his journey intertwining science and the arts. He will focus on his current 3D clay sculpture practice, sharing stories of the science that he abstracts into his art, and the art that throws a philosophical perspective on the science. He will be presenting the aesthetic beauty of science through a contemplation of the art he creates. And he will give us new perspectives to enjoy the art through a contemplation of the science underlying it.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday for a Mumbai Local that brings together arts, science and philosophy through the humble material of clay in sculpture.

RSVP for this session begins on Monday 5th August, 2019.

Scientific techniques and concepts unravel a wondrously beautiful hidden world which is intimately connected with what is visible. Artists, as is their wont, respond intuitively to this beauty and mystery of Science. Capturing and expressing this great beauty becomes a satisfying artistic pursuit.

Sukant Saran, a physicist turned artist, works at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, and considers art a compelling means of self-expression and communication. His abstract pen-works have been shown in two exhibitions, “Meditations (1998) and "Mindscapes” (2001), at Nehru Centre", Mumbai. He has held three exhibition of science-based art; a) “Scientific Art – A Creative Interaction" (2006, IISc, Bangalore and TIFR), b) "SciSights" (2009, TIFR), and c) "Scales: Micrograph-Photo Montages" (2012, TIFR and Panjab University, Chandigarh). Since 2012 he has been involved in creating sculptures; combining scientific concepts with aesthetics of form. A selection of his work can be viewed at the website http://sukantsaran.in.
