Madhu Rye is a Gujarati playwright, novelist and story writer. Born to Vallabhdas Thaker a middle school teacher and Vijiyaben, in Gujaratand educated at Calcutta, he started writing in the 1960s and became known for his stories and plays like Tell Me The Name of a Flower and Kumar's Terrece. He formally studied playwriting  at the University of Hawaii, where he learned to use experimental forms and improvisations as writing aids, which later led to a movement against then rampant absurd theatre in Gujarati. He moved to the US in 1974 and has lived there since. His plays have been  adapted into several languages and media.  The most notable are a Hindi TV series, "Mr. Yogi", and a Hindi film, What's Your Rashee. Madhu Rye has brilliantly adapted Shaw, Durrenmatt and Anthony Schaffers into Gujarati
